Job Summary

Under general supervision, the School-Based Medical Assistant Float assists with the coordination and management of primary health services by providing float coverage within any of the School-Based sites according to staffing needs. The School-Based Medical Assistant Float performs clerical support duties to include outreach, registration, insurance verification, maintenance of records and files, maintenance of a smooth and organized patient flow and facilitation of non-patient care communications. The SBHC Medical Assistant Float also assists the Primary Care Practitioners in all back office duties including medication and immunization maintenance and administration, patient rooming and other tasks associated with the Medical Assistant back office scope.

Essential Functions:

  • Accurately and efficiently schedules and registers patients for clinic visits using information collected from the school-based clinic consent, parent and/or patient. Registration to include insurance verification and eligibility. (5%)
  • Monitors and maintains assigned registration work queues daily. (5%)
  • Fosters positive relationships via outreach to site and community based partners informing of clinic services. (5%)
  • Evaluates need for and provides access to services via school-based patient registries. (5%)
  • Assists provider in setting up for procedures including aseptic and sterile techniques; provides safe administration of medications and immunizations (oral, IM, subcutaneous, and/or intradermal); obtains EKGs, orders appropriate tests as directed by provider; and schedules follow-up appointments as directed by provider. (5%)
  • Accurately and efficiently takes vital signs and basic historical patient data. (5%)
  • Identifies abnormal patient findings. (5%)
  • Communicates patient concerns or significant changes in patient's health status to Provider in a timely manner. (5%)
  • Prepares patients for examinations, assists with examinations, splint applications, minor procedures a variety of other medically related tasks within their scope of knowledge. (5%)
  • Assists in the coordination of clerical information necessary to provide patient care. This may include, but is not limited to: Referrals. (5%)
  • Assists patients with appointments if necessary. (5%)
  • Faxes pertinent medical information. (5%)
  • Maintains patient medical record and other information. (5%)
  • Assists patients with the arrangement of tests and treatments prescribed by Medical Provider. (5%)
  • Assists the provider in providing routine treatment instructions. (5%)
  • Checks in patient by escorting patients from reception area to exam room and communicates information regarding any extended wait or delay in appointment time. (5%)
  • Documents accurately and appropriately in patient medical record. (5%)
  • Prepares exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments/supplies. (5%)
  • Prepares and maintains clinical and office supplies and equipment for treatments, including restocking of exam and treatment rooms. (5%)
  • Maintains a safe environment by practicing sound safety and infection control practices according to agency policies and procedures. (5%)
  • Helps to identify safety and infection control issues. (0%)
  • Performs phlebotomy and various laboratory procedures after competency verified. (0%)
  • Maintains safe collection and processing of laboratory specimens. (0%)
  • Administers immunizations according to the recommendation of Epic Best Practice Advisory and/or the provider for students who have consent for recommended immunization. (0%)
  • Engages in performance appraisal on a routine basis by accepting and providing constructive feedback and integrates feedback into practice. (0%)
  • Participates in competency reviews as required by department. Assumes accountability for achieving goals set jointly with the manager for the next evaluation period. Participates in the peer review process. (0%)
  • Promotes positive interpersonal (customer) relationships with fellow employees, physicians, patients and visitors. Treats these individuals with courtesy, dignity, empathy and respect; consistently displays courteous and respectful verbal and non-verbal communications. (0%)
  • Ensures confidentiality of patient information by creating and maintaining a secure and trusting environment by not sharing information learned on the job, except when necessary in the performance of the job responsibilities or to improve a patient's care. (0%)


Education:

  • Post High School Diploma or Certificate Program Required
  • Graduate from an accredited program in Medical Office Assisting, accredited program of Licensed Practical Nursing with an active LPN license, or completion of the 1997 DHHA Health Care Partner internal training program, required. Required


Work Experience:

  • Completion of a 160 hour externship Required
  • six (6) months direct patient care experience in an outpatient setting: inclusive of phlebotomy, medication administration (intramuscular and subcutaneous injections, and immunizations), and medical/surgical asepsis procedures and techniques, Required and
  • One year of experience working in school-age student services, preferred.


Licenses:

  • DLR-Colorado Driver's License Class R - DMV - Department of Motor Vehicles Required and
  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association Required and
  • CMA-Certified Medical Assistant - AAMA - American Association of Medical Assistants Required and
  • LPN-Licensed Practical Nurse - LPC State Licensing Board Required and


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of medical office practice.
  • Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to use medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
  • Knowledge and applicability of the principles of growth and development over the life span, as well as demonstrating the ability to assess data reflecting the patient's status and interpreting appropriate cultural information of the patient(s) to whom care/services is being delivered/provided.
  • Skill in assisting in a variety of treatments as directed.
  • Skill in taking vital signs.
  • Skill in maintaining records and recording test results.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, employees, physicians and the public.
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly. Ability to use computers and computer systems.
  • Bilingual skills strongly preferred.
