Job Summary

Under direct supervision, provides sub-professional dental work assisting pediatric dentists in the care and treatment of infants, children, adolescents and patients with special health care needs. Functions both as dental chair assistant and teacher. Assists the Dental Chair by passing instruments, preparing compounds, and assisting with taking x-rays and impressions Duties in the dental clinic include individual and team responsibilities. Dental assisting includes treatment room management and sterilization, mixing dental materials, obtaining radiographs, and taking impressions. Dental assisting will encompass surgical procedures and behavior management in the dental clinic as well as in the operating room. Office assistant functions will include patient records management and inventory management. Ability to TRAVEL to all Denver Health dental clinics (including but not limited to - Eastside, Westside, Southwest Pena, Montbello, Lowry, OMC, and Webb) to assist pediatric and general dentistry providers as needed.

Essential Functions:
  • Provides chair side assistance to the pediatric dentist in the examination and treatment of Pediatric aged and special needs patients. This will include restorative and rehabilitation services, orthodontics, space maintenance, endodontics, moderate sedations and other dental procedures. (15%)
  • Greets, seats, and rooms patients immediately, reviews Health History, takes x-rays with good visibility and contrast, expected to have dental set-up ready when dentist enters room, performs special treatment procedures, organizes and has operatory stocked with needed dental instruments & materials. (15%)
  • Sterilizes all dental instruments, handpieces, and counter-tops, & operatories. Proper handling of instrumentation and equipment pre/post procedure. (15%)
  • Cares for dental equipment according to manufactures directions. (15%)
  • Follows guidelines of hospital policy for infection control. (15%)
  • Maintains patient records and indicates the type of work done. (15%)
  • Ability to identify patient safety hazards and behavior management during dental procedures, OR procedures and moderate sedation procedures. (10%)

Education:
  • No High School Diploma and/or No GED Required

Work Experience:
  • 1-3 years years of experience providing chair side assistance to a dentist in the examination and treatment of pediatric patients. Required

Licenses:
  • CDA-Certified Dental Assistant - DANB - Dental Assisting National Board Inc Required and
  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of chair side assistance to the pediatric dentist to ensure effective implementation of four-handed dentistry principles.
  • Knowledge of preparing dental materials.
  • Knowledge and ability to: keep dental units organized, ready, stocked, and clean. Oversees cleanliness and disinfection of treatment rooms and ability to sterilizes all dental instruments and handpieces.
  • Knowledge and ability to follow guidelines of hospital policy for infection control.
  • Knowledge of electronic dental health records/software.
  • Ability to assist in maintaining dental office emergency kits and nitrous and oxygen tanks.
  • Ability to function as an enthusiastic, caring and compassionate individual who enjoys working with children of all ages and patients with special needs care.
